The 1700's in America were a time of hand crafted goods. Industry was in it's infancy and the vast majority of goods were imported. The first half of the 1800's in America witnessed a steady increase in population that pushed ever westward.  Improvements in transportation such as the building of canals and eventually the railroads made it practical to populate the interior.  Industrial production was still a hand craft requiring skilled workers.  This was the start of the industrial revolution in England. As materials and techniques evolved, American manufacturing slowly began to evolve. The push westward was in full flight.

The second half of the 1800's in America saw an explosion of invention. The American industrial revolution had begun. The impetus of the Civil war brought immense changes to the manufacturing scene. Machine made products, identical and interchangeble began to replace the hand crafted goods. Great waves of immigrants arrived. Transportation improvements made the movement of goods and people faster and easier.
